01 / 03 — The Data Services Platform

Before

Data sat across more than 240 separate source systems, alongside legacy systems and obsolete data warehouses spread over two data centres. Divisions across the department each needed their own analytics services, and there was no shared platform to build them on.

With Rplus

Rplus built the Data Services Platform from the discovery phase in 2017 — a multi-tenancy big data platform now holding more than 200 TB from over 250 datasets, with three tenants running on it under strict segregation. We still support it today.

Before

Fraud and error had to be found across the whole department, spanning its various benefits — but the data sat in more than 38 separate datasets, including council data, PAYE from another government department and immigration data from a third. A national address match across 45 TB took three days to run.

With Rplus

Rplus took IRIS through discovery, alpha and beta, and delivered the risk engine and the address matching MLOps pipeline. The same match now runs in three hours, with Python address matching and R clustering identifying groups making similar types of fraud.

Datasets in discovery

Before

When one government department needed a citizen's benefit history from another, there was no direct way to ask. The answers sat across 140 SQL and non-SQL databases spread over cloud and on-premise environments, and every check meant manual work between organisations.

With Rplus

Rplus built REST APIs on the Data Services Platform, exposed to other government organisations. One lookup on a National Insurance number now returns seven years of history, and a second API confirms year-to-date employer history for a further department — all OpenAPI compliant.
